Makes me wish I was a pilot.
These jets are good because they are versatile. In the past, an airforce would have to purchase a variety of aircraft designs to fulfill the different roles it was called upon to do. Even more of those roles can be combined/fulfilled by the same aircraft design with the F-35. Canada's probably most interested in rough runway/VTOL capabilities along with cold/wet weather operational capabilities, which means we're interested in the landing gear and might get a specialized engine in our planes.
Traditionally, nations like the USA have been reserved about sharing certain technologies, with the goal of stifling an enemy nation's progress in developing similar technology. The secret technologies are: 1. Radars, 2. Engines, 3. RAM (Radar Absorbent Materials; paint) What I want to know is what Canada is getting in regards to these, or to what level of parity will ours be to the USA's. It should be equal, given all the money we've dumped into the F-35 project and our national security as of recent.

This was a pretty obvious move and it certainly was the best decision for everyone. There was no competition because other designs weren't in the same league as this aircraft, and we've dumped a lot of money into the design of it and aligned our industries for it's manufacture and support.

Amen brother. Nevermind what those liberal/socialist/fools say. Definately the best thing for Canada. The F-35 is an awesome airplane, and a good fit for us. Kudos to the Americans for letting us in on the development and whatnot.

They didn't "let us", we had to pay $10 million just to be an informed partner and once Lockheed Martin was selected we elected to become a level 3 partner along with some other nations. We essentially bid on it and contracts involved. This isn't exactly a case of arbitrary American goodwill to its northern neighbour.
