Liberals vow to shoot down fighter jet deal

Cancelled by the next Liberal Government, with any luck that will be NEVER. Way to support the defence of Canada.

Considering tax-payers would have to pay the tab in the area of 19 Billion dollars it's a wise decision. We can get already tested, and proven aircraft at a fraction of the price from the UK. Not to mention that we would have access to the source software, which we are being denied by the US to maintain our own fighters.

I dont think the public understands or cares about the deal really, all they hear is "Canada getting new expensive high tech jets!" while visions of the movie Top Gun dance in their heads.

I don't think so, Canadians had no issue when the Liberals cut back on defense back in the 90's. Generally Canadians have not been in favour of massive military build ups, especially when they hear that it's going to cost us 19 billion $.

That just reinforces my theory that the general public neither care nor understand the military. They care about soldiers to some degree now, but they see them as something separate from the military. The CF was seen as a peacekeeping force in the 90s so when massive cuts were made, people didnt care because why would you need new equipment that really wouldnt be used? Now the image of a viable useful military is being sold to the public, so I think they will be on board with military spending. Also what the Liberals want to do and what the majority of Canadians want to do isnt really the same thing as of late.

It's not enough to just Cancel the F35. They need to propose an alternative. Even if that just means an Open Bidding process.

Canada does remember all the Lieral screw up's that is why they are not in power, the liberals will want to spend $ on nothing cancelling contracts. Lets all pray, the Liberals bury themselves deeper and deeper. Call a non-confidence and let us all see who remains in power after the vote.

I guess buying used Military hardware from the Shiteaters is a better solution . Just ask the Navy about doing that. The CF already has been burned by the Brits, It's called lessons learned

The F35 is CHEAPER than the Typhoon.

I don't think Canadians and the CF ever forgave the Liberals after cancelling the 101 contract. That kept the sea crates in the air for another decade and cost more in $ and lives than the 101 would have.

I thought the Libs got us into the F35 project? We started getting involved in this in 2001.

I remember the last time the Liberals cancelled a Conservative military procurement. We never did get those helicopters did we?

Are the Libs proposing to do an 'EH101' on a procurement project that they initiated? Show me any combat aircraft project that isn't a Mig where that isn't the case.

Do we want another hangar-queen like the CF18 or do we want an aircraft that can deploy with and support our Army? The CF18 is currently noticeable by it’s absence in Afghanistan.

The F35 has been in development for 11 years, there is the fighter/strike version, the STOVL version for the Marines and the naval version. That's three separate aircraft in one program.

The strategic plusses on this project should not be underestimated.
This aircraft is also the weapon of choice for all our main allies. Interoperability will be a key factor in a unstable world where working in the field with our allies is a major asset.

But I suppose scoring cheap political points over military procurement is more of a Liberal priorty than getting the kit Air Command needs.
