I see the GG as a gruel exercise in the epitomy of manners. It's nice that they found a distiguished University President that would take the job on.

I would say a good choice and wish him the best.

The committee ruled out sports, entertainment and arts figures, deciding that the next governor general should be well-versed in constitutional matters and parliamentary procedure, in case Canada finds itself in an extended period of minority governments.
Sounds like they actually put some thought into it. I suppose some would prefer a celeb.

I'm quite happy with this choice -- it is good to see an academic in the top position in Canada, especially for the reasons which were stated in the article in regards to his legal expertise.

You don't like the thought of a member of a minority as GG? ;)

Sounds like your PM is choosing a GG with brains. Public Officials that know what they are doing What a concept, let's try that in The States as opposed to what we have now.

IMHO Jean was a typical GG, nothing special, whereas Clarkson was selfless and caring, giving up holidays to visit troops overseas and to work on special issues.

Given that the GG is basically just a rubber stamp in the government, the person's ability is less of an issue than the PM. Another guy from the Old Boys Network probably won't make any more of a difference than picking another CBC host would have.

    I liked Clarkson.
She did a good, solid job. I liked her when she was at the CBC too.

Jean was/is a bit of a lime-light hogger and didn't really know her place within the whole system. Hence her being in China when Betty popped over. Her idiot husband just annoys the shit out of me too. Good riddance I say.

Hopefully this guy can do what's expected.
