'Sea monster' whale fossil unearthed

Just a larger analogous version of the orca. Unlike the the sperm whale, this whale had teeth on its upper jaw.

It's 3 meters smaller then a Bull Sperm Whale. I means it's big, maybe a devourer of the lesser whales but not super fancy.

I wonder if this beast and Megalodon fought each other for ocean supreamcy?

pretty sure that the fight would end up much the same way an orca vs. great white would. One of the most highly evolved aquatic mammalian predators against one of the most primitive of fish.

Hard to say if Leviathan and Megalodon would have "fought each other for ocean supremacy". They sure would have crossed paths. One was probably the alpha predator when comparing apples to apples, full size male to full size male, but they would have fed on each others young and the like if opportunity presented itself. For both of them to evolve and both to die out, they probably each had a certain niche in the food chain and it could very well have brought them into competition with each other for food. They survived along side each other just like today's Orcas and Great Whites and just like today, a few sharks became whale food and maybe a few whales were on the sharks menu from time to time. Would have been a sight to see though... from a long friggen way off ....those two deciding to have a go at one another...

I agree that she is very look-alike. It's astounding.

Talk about timely, I saw an episode of Jurassic Fight club on Friday that dealt with this exact scenario.

According to them, the winner was Megalodon simply because it doesn't need to breath like the whale did, and was not forced to the surface for air at any time during the battle. But Shep was right, these whales did live in pods and in the fight, the pod protected the lone straggler and rammed Megalodon several times, driving it off, but not before it inflicted a massive bite on the whale. So in the end, Megalodon got dinner and the rest of the pod survived.

They speculate that Megalodon was the supreme lone killer in that era, while these whales were the supreme pack hunters. They also noted that the emergence of orcas was one of the reasons Megalodon went extinct (the other being the loss of large numbers of huge prey animals - Megalodon was thought to need two tons of food every day to survive).

His politics are more rational too than ol' Bucky's will ever be.
