Until this month, Ottawa had ignored natives’ pleas for a provincewide point-of-sale exemption from the HST after it takes effect on July 1. But with native leaders set to plan protests that could include outright blockades, federal and provincial officials engaged in a frantic round of negotiations.

Typical behaviour. Either give me what I want or we use the power of our unemployed masses to mess with the lives of those who are productive. The sad part is the government capitulated.

The usual crap. The white man never gives them enough money, and they don't want to pay their share of the freight. And the government finds it easier to bribe them with our money than stand up to them.

Why don't we all threaten the government with blockades and all this other bullshit to get what we want? Perhaps it is because we would be thrown in jail. Go figure, one group has the government by the short and curlies and the rest of us bitch and complain and then bend over backwards and take it.

We are the govt. The govt bends over because we don't care enough or actively sympathize with the natives.

andyt. I can sympathize with natives when I see that they are trying to better themselves but I have no sympathy for them when the use and interpret antiquated documents to their advantage. I am sure that, if we could find a loophole, we would all not pay taxes. Unfortunately this country would grind to a halt and we would all be in trouble.

If they don't feel that they should pay taxes then, I think, they should not have access to all the programs they demand. As you say, we are the government, so let's change the rules and get rid of race based exemptions.

believe it or not, like it or not, the hst is a violation of rights given to the First Nations by the government, they should have realized that right away then the First Nations wouldn't have to resort to what they are threatening

The Muslim Defence League is also in talks wiht the Harper government, and apparently Muslims are going to be exemnpt from the HST as well, since it is aginast their religion.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

I just don't get it! Why, as a caucasion male Canadian (born and raised), am I not covered by our own constitution to the extent that certain groups are? My only right seems to be the right to pay taxes to cover the asses of those who seem to constitutionaly protected from doing the same. Religious rights and priviledges should end once these people leave their country and enter and swear to become Canadian.

Are we so damn politically correct that we will trample our own rights to provide others with theirs?
