No public money was involved and no open accusations of criminality were ever proven. All this was was a lynch mob based on the bogus statements of a professional con man who's now serving time in a German jail. If anyone looks like fools in all of this it's the NDP's and Liberals who wasted all this time and money with a pitifully disguised attempt at revenge against Mulroney for beating them so badly back in the 1980's. This whole silly episode will barely deserve the asterisk it'll be given in the offical Parliamentary history books.
Hope you are right personally I like Brian Mulroney and I think he was a good PM and it was very nice that the Canadian PM and the US President got along as well as they did.

Uhh, no. Mulroney received a $2.1M settlement from Canadian taxpayers after he swore, under oath, that he had not had a business relationship with Karlheinz Schreiber. He's since changed ADMITTED that was a lie. Whether Schreiber's a conman or not has no bearing on the lie (actually, that makes it even WORSE for Mulroney; "the company you keep", and all).
You're right, though, this is about revenge. It's not about revenge for 1980s elections, it's revenge for breach of public trust by the highest government official in the country. Mulroney's a douchebag, he owes Canadians $2.1M, plus interest and he's fully earned the label he'll wear as his legacy: a sleazy, lying crook.
That man has fallen quite a bit.
