Wow just think of the cures that may be developed from Cancer, MS, or better yet stronger corn than can be grown in the deserts of Africa where people are starving to death...

While the scientific development was only an incremental step toward custom-made organisms, it has already attracted considerable debate.

The same debate which has been going on for 30+ years, of course, the only difference now is a marginal step forward in the discoveries being made in the field.

I figure it'll be a week or two before the designer baby debate comes to the fore again.

Just to better explain myself, I didn't state a viewpoint or whether or not it existed, I said I bet the debate would come roaring back to the fore with this news being released.

I'm gunshy with my views. :D

I'm all for genetically modifying the species. Longer life(150 yrs), better metabolisms and rendering all but a few humans sterile.

Why not? If we can get the population down to about 1 billion healthy individuals, isn't that a good thing for us and the planet?

I don't even want to imagine the ramifications of that idea.

I think it would cause a world war. Even if all governments agreed upon it, entire populations would revolt.

I think it would make the first two look like border skirmishes in comparison.
