Ronnie James Dio, whose soaring vocals, poetic lyrics and mythic tales of a never-ending struggle between good and evil broke new ground in heavy metal, died Sunday, according to a statement from his wife and manager. He was 67.
Dang. I remember seeing him and 'Rainbow' opening for Blue Oyster Cult at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in December 1983. Believe it or not, it was Dio who turned me on to classical music! One of the pieces the band did during their set was a very faithful rendition of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony which I had never heard before at that point of my life. Dio opened up a whole new world of music to me and that's why I'll always remember him and his band.
