Iran could produce enough highly enriched uranium with the number of centrifuges it has installed to build one nuclear bomb in as little as a year, the head of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency said on Wednesday.

Maybe that's not such a bad thing. The genie's out of the bottle anyway. Maybe every nation should have some nukes to make things fair.

anyway, I'll bet the Iranians have it already,
still working on a delivery system.

Nope, just exploring the question. We know NK and Pak already have them, Indian and Israel too. Every self respecting nation is going to want some, because once you've got em, nobody messes with you. There's really no way to prevent it anyway, if a nation is determined enough.

Not a surprise. What is more interesting is how other nations will react.

I douhat the Israelis are going to let the Iranians have an opeational deliverable bomb. They don't have much sense of humour when it comes to an Iranian bomb and theto wipe them off the map.

It may not be a full sca;e strike, but I don't see the Israeli a;;owing the Iranians to push them into the sea.

The problem with every nation having nukes is: What do you do when that country becomes a failed state?

Also Iran is bent an destroying Israel, this isn't the classic "You hit me I'll hit you back harder" deal like the cold war was. This is Iran saying "Your gonna die"

One year? Who cares. They could buy one off North Korea or Khazakhstan tomorrow.

    They probably already have.

I don't think so. Look at the unstable governments of NK and Pakistan or even the whole Pakistan/India ever present conflict.

People thought the USSR would eventually drop the big one. It never did. I have an English bud who told me that if the IRA ever got the bomb then London would be vapour.

    It never happened.

To the first point, I wouldn't worry too much, I think the US still has a few years left in it. But you're right, you never know.

To the second. Iran isn't a nation of suiciders - unless they think they can obliterate Israel in one swoop they wouldn't use it. And even then, they'd have to think about the US response. I just think it would be interesting to see how Israel would adapt if it faced a creditable threat. Maybe they'd be more willing to withdraw behind the green line.

Pakistan AND India. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with a nation that has the bomb AND believes in re-incarnation.

The IRA had a few crazies but they were (are) a very disciplined and structured organisation.

A bomb in London would have killed hundreds of thousands of Irish and the radioactive fallout would have spread all over Ulster and Eire as well as the mainland UK, France, Belgium, Holland etc.
That would not have bode well for the IRA or Sinn Fein.

Small scale atrocities are much easier for supporters to justify. Contaminating half of NW Europe would be too much, even for Sinn Fein, so I'm not convinced on your Limey mates musing.
