Truro man finally honoured for WWI bravery Pte. Jones overlooked for years because of race A long-awaited honour has finally been bestowed on the family of a World War One hero.
The family of Pte. Jeremiah Jones recieved the Canadian Forces Distinguished Service Medal Monday at a ceremony in Truro.
During the battle for Vimy Ridge, Jones, who was serving with the 106th Battalion of the Nova Scotia Rifles, single-handedly took out a German machine gun nest.
Jones' grandson, Roger, tells CTV the honour comes so late because his grandfather was black.
"I think it's been a struggle and government, military at times have not recognized the deeds of people from the African community and now they're doing it," he said. "And I think it's about time."
Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis and Defence Minister Peter MacKay both attended the ceremony.
