One of the many unheralded Canadian heros... Too bad he wasn't still alive to accept the honour...

The news article alleges he was long overlooked because of his race. Jones was an African-Canadian....

It is also interesting to note Jones was in his 50's when he fought in WWI making his efforts all the more heroic...

Truro man finally honoured for WWI bravery
Pte. Jones overlooked for years because of race
A long-awaited honour has finally been bestowed on the family of a World War One hero.

The family of Pte. Jeremiah Jones recieved the Canadian Forces Distinguished Service Medal Monday at a ceremony in Truro.

During the battle for Vimy Ridge, Jones, who was serving with the 106th Battalion of the Nova Scotia Rifles, single-handedly took out a German machine gun nest.

Jones' grandson, Roger, tells CTV the honour comes so late because his grandfather was black.

"I think it's been a struggle and government, military at times have not recognized the deeds of people from the African community and now they're doing it," he said. "And I think it's about time."

Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis and Defence Minister Peter MacKay both attended the ceremony.
