But what if Harper had had his professed wish of an elected Senate – a wish according to a just-released Harris-Decima poll that the Prime Minister shares with a substantial majority of Canadians?
A look at the fractured federal political landscape sug
If you are going to elect a senate, it must be seperate from the Government in that it should not be subject to an election due to confidence matter and such. They should be held every 4 years regardless of what happens in the HOC.
I also agree that they have to redistribute the seats.
I also believe that an elected senate should be the ones who vote on proroguing the HOC and committees, regardless of who is in power with a 75% approval required
I enjoy her on the National's Political Panel and have never read her column. She makes very good points in that article, but I find it hard to Read. Her style just doesn't flow well.
And my 2c is that if it's to be elected and effective it should also be an unaffiliated separate house. Senators should have no Party affiliation. You can elect them because they're conservative or liberal or socialist but not because they're Conservative, Liberal or NDP just wanting to further the Party goals.
