The Montreal Canadiens have called a news conference for 4pm et/1pm pt where they will announce that Bob Gainey is stepping down as general manager of the hockey club.

    Gainey has been a class act throughout his career...AND I'm NO Habs fan....

    its a tough market as there is such a history of success that the fans expect so much from the team and anything short of a deep playoff run is a massive failure . so its a very tough team to manage in that sort of atmosphere .

    I'd go along with that. Good on him...he feels he can't commit to do the job to the best of his ability, so, time to go. Classy!

    Deep playoff run my ass, hoisting the Cup is the only measure of success in Montreal. :lol:

    With that kind of pressure, you can understand why it'd burn a person out. The only one it never seemed to affect was Sam Pollock.

    It'll be interesting to see if the Hab's management changes direction, given a new owner and a new GM?

    Pierre Gauthier, the new GM, seems to be from the same school than Bob. And Bob is still conseiling Gauthier.
