Toyota's massive recalls over problem gas pedals in the U.S. are being extended to Europe, the latest blow to the world's top automaker as it struggles to salvage its safety reputation.

Not impressed. Mind, the recall is based on a handful of incidents, so this is a massive CYA effort. Phone my dealership over my Tundra and they were quite helpful and eager to answer questions and offer an inspection. This'll hurt them, but they'll get through it like every other car manufacturer that has had issues in the past (ie Ford Pinto)

The difference between this recall by Toyota and most of the major North American recalls is that Toyota is owning up to the problem in a big way. I still remember Ford threatening to sue anyone who claimed there was a problem with the Explorer when they were turning turtle on the highway and killing people.

It's a huge issue, and seemingly a global issue. If they tried to hide it, they'd be in big trouble, like Ford was

Edit: Seems like all car companies act alike.

According to a letter filed by Toyota to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday, the automaker first heard complaints about pedal malfunction in the Tundra truck in March 2007.

The Times has reported that at least 19 people had been killed in U.S. accidents involving runaway Toyota and Lexus vehicles, more than all other automakers combined. It also found that complaints of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles rose sharply after 2001, when the automaker began installing electronic throttle controls.

Keep reading the other links at the bottom of the article and you'll see where every time there was a law suit against Toyota they settle out of court and made the accident victims sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Phil Edmonston from Lemon Aid was on News 95.7 right earlier this am. He alleges Toyota has known of this problem for 6 years...

Toyota has also concealed evidence in court which may result in some cases being re-opened...

This is about the floormats, right?
Just get the damned things out. They are useless.

That was the initial idea but it turned out it's actually the accelerator mechanism. It seems that Ford is now recalling some of their vehicles in China for the same problem. They’re using the same part.

    Recall spreads to Ford

Stemmer will be real upset when he learns the defective part causing all this trouble is built by CTS Corp. , based in Elkhart, Ind. An American company!

I like Toyota Trucks, if it wasn't for Toyota, my full size Chevy would be the biggest gas guzzler on the market.

My Tundra's 4.6L is a hell of a lot better than my old Chev's 305.

The small block Chevy has been the norm & king of hot rodders sinceit's inception in 1955 as the 265 ci V8. There's a good reason for this. Durability, reliability and easy to maintain...

And the Honda/Mazda/Nissan I-4s have been norm and king of tuned cars since the 80s.

You know Renault and Nissan are partners but Renault cannot put any cars in a Nissan showroom. The head of the WTO has remarked Japan has the most closed trade policy of any industrialized nation in the world...

Might be, but it was an underpowered gas guzzler in my half ton chevy.
