Manitoba's NDP government strongly discourages teachers from deducting marks from students who are late in submitting assignments.

If I handed an work assignment or project into my boss/work late, the consequences could be "loss of a deal/money" for that company, or even being fired. I went to school, college and handed every assignment in on time. Teachers give students lots of time to complete assignments. Marks should be taken off for lateness. Those that hand in assignments on time should reap in the benefits of having "full marks!" vs those handing i assignments in late.

It's a good habit to have things done on time, and should be punishable if it's late.

    Where's the accountability ?

I wonder if Manitoba teachers receive the same policy if they turn out report cards late?

This is as far as I got as to reading the story:
Bjornson said that if a teacher deducts 10 or 20 per cent because a student turns work in late, then that mark is not "an accurate indicator of what the student has learned or achieved."

If that is the standard nowadays, I fear for our economy.

There is no more. It's damaging to their poor, fragile little egos.

    It's such bullshit.

I guess I'm the devil's advocate here, but tardiness has little to do with smarts. I understand though the idea of punishment for being late, so I'd feel fine with added assignments, detention, etc. But I feel anything that doesn't directly relate to the intelligence of a student should not be part of the assignments.

Sorry if that pisses you off.

It's not about tardiness, per se, and has NOTHING to do with intelligence. It's about the lesson behind the rules. It teaches accountability, time management, prioritizing (homework before playing). Basically - due dates for homework are a chapter in Life 101. They're screwing you (meaning students) out of one of the most important lessons you'll learn in school, and one that will serve you VERY well no matter what job/career path you choose to take later on. Unfortunately, common sense is also being eliminated from the curriculum these days.

What utter nonsense. I was educated in both provinces Ab, & Man., military, public, separate schools and college. Must have been 'the old days' cuz 'back then' an assignment was handed in by the due date or it was considered 'not done' and graded 0,'Late, was not an option! Then the student had the dubious task of having the 'so-marked' assignment signed by BOTH parents!

In middle school (at least for 1 year) we had the whole (late is a 0, must be signed, and a detention) along with still doing the assignment the next day. Then when I got into high school due dates weren't as strict. Most teaches would do half credit by the next morning, or 10% off a day for bigger projects. And now in college, as long as I get it in before the semester is over it counts as full credit.

I don't think teachers should take off points if there is a valid reason for it. I mean, everyone has a different life and teachers can't expect there students to live perfect lives where doing homework comes easy. However, I do think that now that it's known there will be tons of kids taking advantage.

    That's already pretty sad, CD.

All I can say is that when you hit the real world, the situation will change,
and you will be ill-prepared for it, having in your head that being late is ok.

    I am about to go thru this with one of my employees;
his December paperwork still hasnt arrived, and I had to close 2009 without him.
His lack of discipline will now cost him a pile of money........
oh yeah, btw, it'll cost me as well.

Yeah I know I am spoiled when it comes to it. But I still turn my stuff in when it's due just so I don't piss off the teachers  . I can only remember a few times when I turned things in late and it was with an ok by my teachers when I had computer problems.

However, other people in my classes are really lazy about due dates. Some girl turned in half of her assignments on the last day of class....8 weeks of work done probably within a few days.

I tend to feel that assignments are for idiots that don't know how to do well on an exam. If you can do well on the exam, then its time to move on to the next topic, not waste time proving that you have better or worse homework skills than the retard down the street.

In life, everything is an assignment. There are no exams. You submit your assignments on time, because your bosses assignment depends on yours, and the company bills the customer based on that. The customer has assignments, that result in your company being paid, and in turn paying you. Up and down the ladder, everyone has assignments.

You get your assignments in on time or no one gets paid and you can go work for someone else.

This is the exam: Do you have a job tomorrow? Then you passed it. Anything less than a mark of 100% gets you in trouble, and constantly coming in less than 100% gets you unemployed. Companies that come it at 50% don't last very long.
