Here is one 'scam' that is legal, (I have this on very reliable authority)and WILL BE STARTING SOON! This is how it works.

NOTE*** A reputable charity raising funds for the Haiti, or any other disaster WILL NOT phone you****

RE: Companies which raise funds for charities. They are 'self-serving' telemarketers.

'Company XYZ will call you up saying something along the lines of " Hi Mr/Mrs 'Jones', (They will use your name as they got it either from a list which they purchased, if you have EVER donated to any reputable charity by phone, ie cancer society, Heart and Stroke Foundation etc. your name IS on a list as a 'Mark', or the phone directory.) My name is 'Bill' and I am sure that by now you have heard about the terrible disaster in Haiti. Well I'm calling 'ON BEHALF OF' ( note ,they won't tell you that 'I work for the Red Cross') the Red Cross and I'm calling you today to see if you could possibly make a donation towards our disaster relief efforts?
Now, once they have you 'on the hook' they will 'work you, play on your sympathies to squeeze as much $$$ out of you as possible.
Let say you donate $50.00. ONLY $2.50, that's right, TWO DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS (5%) of your fifty bucks will go to Red Cross. The telemarketers use the name of a reputable, known charity, with said charities permission, and then solicit donations. Law in Alberta is that ' no less than 5% of funds solicited MUST go to the named charity'. And 5% IS ALL that will be forwarded!~ Where do you suppose the other %95 of your donation goes?? That' riiight! Right into the pockets of the telemarketing firm!
