I applaud the fatwas against attacks on the US and Canada. but there there are Islamic groups that do just the opposite.

Does one set of fatwas superceed others fatwas?

    Who can issue a fatwa?

In islam, there really is no central religious authority or hierarchy and no muslim "pope" figure that speaks to the entire religion. Its like protestantism in the repsect that preachers are local figures leading their own congregations and each is free to interpret and teach the religion as they see fit. Followers are free to join and attend whatever congregation that suits their personal beliefs. There are literlist, fundamentalist conservative preachers and there are interpretive, liberal preachers, just like in Christianity.

Any religious leader can issue a fatwa on any subject. A fatwa, as I understand it, is just a declaration by any religious leader and not some commandment to all muslims. If you dont happen to be a follower of the leader or leaders issuing that particular fatwa, then I guess you just ignore it the same way a presbyterian ignores the declarations of some anglican priest from the church across town. If you are a follower, then I guess you either accept the "wisdom" of the preacher and follow their beliefs or you switch to a different mosque.

This is a step in the right direction for North American Muslims.

I absolutly agree that this is a step in the right direction. I persoanlly feel that any group that kills in the name of God, Allah,Yaway, or what ever you you call you higher power defiles your faith.

It is unusual to here any Islamic Group say anything good about the religious environments in either the US or Canada.

The American foreign police in the Mid-East is about wrong up as it can possibly imagine. Almost all Americans will admit it, The rest know it but won't say it.

If we can remove the violence from the equation hopefully we can can comu up with some intelligent policies.

This is a great step foreward.

I dont think this is any great step forward, these are the same people who spoke out out against 9/11 at that time and every terrorist event since and have been trying to make themselves visible to the Canadian public as the mainstream 'moderate' voice of islam ever since.

Unfortunately, there is so much coverage of extremist islam, the public quickloy forgets about them and these guys end up geting painted with the same brush as the extremists do every time.

    Wow that's great.

But I don't think it will help much. As BeaverFeaver says, there's no supreme voice in Islam. They are following there own islamist sects. For them, those moderates will be considered infidels like us.

If the pope says something, this is it. No question.
Don't try to explode in an airplane says the pope ? Ok !
    Don't murder children ? Ok !

    Don't molest 12yo boys ? Ok ! ... well...

Not that it was necessary, but now that this has been done I expect no one to ever claim that Muslims never condemn the nonsense perpetrated by Terrorists again. I suspect some will though, for them it will be "Fail" with no explanation.
