This happens to non-muslims all the time - if you don't have a return ticket they are going to be suspicious. Had a friend who was about to be refused entry because of one way ticket (was planning to drive back) until he told the border goon "you know the US is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there." When I immigrated WITH tthe proper paperwork, I was advised to book a return ticket and just not get on the flight back. Immigrations never sees your ticket, and customs in the country you leave is not making a drama.
