The French tried the same thing a few years ago when they sank the Greenpeace boat Rainbow Warrior adn murdered a crew member. It backfired on them, since Greenpeace popularity increased significantly after that.

"They were stopped dead in the water when the incident occurred," Maclean said of the Ady Gil. "When they realized that the Shonan Maru was aiming right for them, they tried to go into reverse to get the bow out of the way but it was too late. The Shonan Maru made a course correction and plowed directly into the front end of the boat."

Wow. I think it was last year, people were upset the Sea Shepherd rammed the Maru. Now, how about that.

With all this yearly 'research' into whales, it's odd that we still don't know how long they live. Unless they meet the Shonan Maru, that is.

The shitty part of this is, in order to replace that vessel they'll be revisiting the cash cow that likely enabled them to purchase it in the first place.

    Canada's seal hunt.

I recall a show several years ago where researchers were sent to a deceased, washed up whale on the West Coast. During their dissection before the Natives in the area carted what they wanted away, they found an aboriginal harpoon head in it that hadn't been in use since before the first Europeans, not counting the Vikings, bumped into this continent.

Sad, but true. In order to do any meaningful research into long term trends, you have to catch, tag and release them. The Japanese have no intention of doing that, therefore logic dictates the Japanese are not doing research. Never intended to.

The 'nonprofit' group that runs the Maru fleet is nothing more than a scam. It's a commercial whaling operation. I wonder what's next. Corset's and hoop skirts?

And Bob Barker gave them that boat too. Same guy who wants to kill Lucy the Elephant here in Edmonton.

Oh, yeah, I know all about the scam of "research" that the Japanese carry out to satisfy their demand for whale meat. I totally agree that it's nothing more than commercial whaling. They use bribes and coercion on a regular basis at the IWC to prevent an outright ban on their "research".

When I lived there, a whale beached itself a few towns over, and instead of trying to dig it out and get it back out to sea, the townspeople simply waited until it died and then carved it up for dinner.
