How about every time you do something remotely wrong with your vehicle, you send a cheque to the government? Paying fines is only a minimum requirement, you can always send more if you feel its necessary.

The big secret the gummint won't be telling you is that people adjust their behaviour based on their odds of getting caught, not based on the severity of the punishment. So when you raise the fine without increasing enforcement--it's a money grab.

The other thing that happens is that once the fine gets to a certain level, people starting hiring lawyers to fight them. So for drinking and driving, they created an entire new form of law specializing in getting people off drunk driving charges--and they do very well.

its getting to a point where the fines are so likely, and so steep. I'm seriously considering putting road tar on my license plate.

I understand that covering my license plate is illegal, but I'm only managing my risks. i think it would be less risky to cover the plates. I live in a big city, the cops are neither accustomed or inclined to pull over a middle aged person in a vehicle that is being driven responsibly. In fact, my driving style tends to leave me invisible to them, that is why I don't like cameras. Cameras dont forgive or use discretion.

Yep. Its always a tax grab unless they actually lose money because people decide it's now worth their time to fight the tickets.

Still as far as raising funds I think this is preferable to raising taxes and quite frankly people who run red lights deserve to be paying high fines.

Everyone fighting every ticket could be a very effective way to fighting automated cameras that are merely there to grab money.

Its also a great way for the government to simply raise taxes to cover the now overburdened court system.

Here's a suggestion for ya, DON'T RUN RED LIGHTS and you won't be paying anything.

But I guess it's better paying to have a bunch of cops watching red lights instead of chasing down serious crime.

See here's the thing. When I lived in Cambridge, it was one of the cities used for the pilot project. I had to pass through that intersection EVERY day and guess what? I never got a fine. Ya know why? CUZ I STOP FOR RED LIGHTS!
