Unilingual woman loses postmistress job

Livng and working in many Government buildings in Ottawa, my friends and I would shake our heads at "bilingual" service. Being "biliingual" meant speaking french fluently, and being able to say a few words in english. Yes! equal rights.

There are no Francophones in Pankenham, the few that are speak fluent english. If people expect anglos that live in Quebec to speak french, the same should apply for Francos living in Ontario.

Give this women her job back, language nazis.

BTW people don't respect another persons language very well by having it forced down their throats when there's no reason to.

Canada posts is a FEDERAL branch, and therefore bilingual service is MANDATORY! All she has to do is either learn french or apply for a burger flipper job.

Really?? Called many Federal government offices and got an East Indian or Pakistani that speaks French have you?
And I'm sure that the Sikhs that joined the RCMP spoke fluent French as well.
Seems to me that the only ones that need to speak French if they wanna work at the federal level are the ones that were born here.

I work for the federal government and I don't speak french, nor do I have a desire to.

You guys do know that ALL us French Canadians are perfectly bilingual, right???

First off, if Canada Post finds it that important to be bilingual, she never should have been hired.
Second... WTF is wrong with taking a French course??

Depends on when she was initially hired. My father worked for the feds for years, didn't speak a word of French, oddly, he also didn't speak a word of his native language either.
The must be bilingual thing came in after he started working there. What it DID do, was prevent him from ever advancing any higher than he was, despite the years and experience he had.

Yeah, but at 50 years of age, or older, why should he have had to after 25 years experience and being hired when bilingualism WASN'T a prerequisite?

25 years ago, bookkeeping was done with pencil and paper... I would imagine the bookkeeper who did that like that for years has to learn the computerized way too...
There must be a reason why Canada Post found it important all of a sudden to be bi-lingual, and I think they should have offered a course (if they didn't do that, I don't know).
Personally, I think that if you have a bi-lingual country, you ahve to teach both languages in school. Hell, I was taught 4! In a mono-lingual country!
