Whatever one thinks of the climate change debate, I just dont buy that the majority of scientists around the world -most of whom live and work in the wealthy developed countries- are part of some vast global conspiracy to transfer wealth out of their home countries to third-wold nations. Interestingly enough, the article is short on explanations as to why this consipracy exists.

It's no secret that developing nations in Copenhagen are pushing for massive amounts of cash out of countries like Canada.

Yeah, but developing countries don't own or control the international scientific community, which is my point.

It won't matter. The way it's being set up, even if Canada tells them to get stuffed, we'll just be locked out of global trade.

This isn't much different than being forced to shell out money so the guy down the block can fix his house up. I mean what the fuck? We're gonna give a bunch of shithole countries money to "help" them with greening their "economies" so we can keep using coal and oil? Instead of using that money to find ways to reduce OUR reliance on coal and oil. Well that's just brilliant. I didn't realize that Uganda, Burundi OR Sudan even HAD a fucking economy to speak of.

My point exactly. Let's see, so far, the umpteen billion dollars African countries have received have just been used to kill more people.

Heyyy that's it, kill off all those poor people in poor countries. That will reduce the amount of CO2 they expel into the air, thusly reducing carbon emissions. The system works

Prposed or not it's BS, how is this going to reduce current levels of greenhous gasses? Supporting economies that may or may not eveolve to what we are at today is the dumbest idea ever and all we will see out of it is increased prices for everything.

Let me go on the record and say I am NOT for the cap-and-trade system, and I dont buy the sincerity of governments that are promoting it.

First, most of the "cap and trade" schemes involve creating a new financial instrument called the carbon credit, which all kinds of middle-men, speculators, and wall street magicians can trade and manipulate in the market like they did with subprime mortgages and credit default swaps. The primary beneficiaries are brokers and traders, not industry or citizens or countries. Its highly gameable in that under many of the proposals, you can get valuable "carbon credits" for doing things of questionable environmental value, like for planting saplings or commercial crops, even though you clearcut an ancient rainforest for the farmland.

Second, the "transfer of wealth" to developing countries is based on the idea that these countries are not heavily industrialized and so will have carbon credits they can sell us so we can keep polluting. This basically means we are planning to pay under-developed countries to stay under-developed so we can continue to pollute and industrialize. Its exploitation. We already see incidence of farmers in India giving up their modern irrigation irrigation systems for more primative human-powered pumps so they can cash in on a half-credit per year, which they sell to the west. A bunch of impoverished farmers in India now spend most of their day on a treadmill or treadle so that some wasteful western company can continue to pollute and produce inefficiently- its exploitative.

Imagine how ludicrous this would be in any other scenario: Health Canada fighting diabetes with "calorie credits" that allow obese people to continue gorging themselves by paying skinny low income families not to eat. It wouldn't make sense there and this doesn't make sense either.

Cap & trade is just a tax, theres only one group of people that pay taxes thats us.
I'm not a fan of paying taxes, first off. Second paying taxes for some bull shit eco-scam to fill the pockets of a few, they can kiss my ass. Time to write the PMO again.

It is being estimated the Copenhagen deal may cost on average each Canadian family an additional $3000.00 each year... The draft agreement, was reportedly pushed by President Barack Obama, the U.K. and Denmark... At least Bush would have had the stones to stand up to the UN's chicanery...
