In the case of the systemic oppression of women in other countries and cultures, we, the public, have only ourselves to blame.

There's no outcry over here because it isn't easy, and it takes longer than one day.

The premise is loaded right from the start:
"In the case of the systemic oppression of women in other countries and cultures, we,(in our country) the public, have only ourselves to blame."

    This isn't really true:
From 1996 to 2001, when the Taliban imposed their bizarre and cruel collection of edicts designed to stifle the life out of Afghan women and girls, the western world barely noticed.

No the taliban was getting a lot of attention/international pressure pre-9/11 it's just that for a lot of us, especially in the media I suppose, it's hard to remember pre-9/11.

Other than that it's not a bad article.
