The Harper government won't buy into the "hype" surrounding the Copenhagen climate summit to rush into a new deal, said Environment Minister Jim Prentice on Friday.

Why should we have different standards than the US? Air doesn't recognize the border.

    Yup,

Kennmore would slam him for not going, then slam him with his predicatble photo op remark when he does go.

Maybe cause we are a different country and we should have our own position not one given to our goverment by a foreign nation . O right our goverment is beholding to them cause they do all for us. I believe in an independent Canada maybe you don,t fine .

Harper's going because Obama is. From the Harper government point of view, global warming is all a pile of crap anyways, so their approach is to, as much as possible, avoid the economic liabilities associated with the global policy response to climate change. And that means doing whatever it takes to make sure that trade with the US isn't impacted.

Makes sense from that point of view. My only beef is that the Conservatives can't be honest about it and just say "We think global warming is a pile of crap." Then again, asking for politicians not to lie is a bit like asking snakes not to slither.

I think GW is a pile of crap, but I'm happy that the PM is going to a conference that will achieve sweet FA.

I don't think most Canadians think it's a pile of crap, so that's probably why the Conservatives are lying about believing in it.

Me, I think a lot of Canadians think GW is bollocks. The ones I meet and work with do, obviously your social circle doesn't.

Give me definitive evidence and I'll believe. The shit I've seen so far doesn't convince me at all.

Harper and all parties need to pay lip service to it, even though they may not believe it. It's politics. I wish we had the guts that the politicians in Austrailia had because they definately don't have problems calling this a turd in the punch bowl.

Efforts to support global climate-change falls: Poll

There is both growing public reluctance to make personal sacrifices and a distinct lack of enthusiasm for the major international efforts now underway to battle climate change, according to findings of a poll of 12,000 citizens in 11 countries, including Canada.

Less than half of those surveyed, or 47 per cent, said they were prepared to make personal lifestyle changes to reduce carbon emissions, down from 58 per cent last year.

Only 37 per cent said they were willing to spend "extra time" on the effort, an eight-point drop.

The Canadian results, from a poll of 1,000 respondents conducted in September, were virtually identical to the overall figures. There are no comparative figures for Canada because Canadians weren't included in the global study in 2007.

And only one in five respondents - or 20 per cent - said they'd spend extra money to reduce climate change. That's down from 28 per cent a year ago.

This pile of crap is starting to stink and Canadians like the rest of the world are waking up to the stink.
