Health minister says Liberal amendments gut product safety bill

Aglukkaq called on Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff to pressure Liberal senators to vote down the amendments and to vote in favour of the original bill. The legislation, crafted to replace the current law, received unanimous support in the House of Common

    "Shame on the senators who pushed for these amendments. Against the backdrop of some of the largest consumer product recalls in history, and clear evidence that the current broken system is harming Canadians, their actions show a shocking disregard for the public good," said Rick Smith, executive director of Environmental Defence.

    "Canadian children should not have less protection than children living in the United States and throughout Europe."

    Consumers Council of Canada president Don Mercer said he "deplores" the Liberal amendments.
