153 bikes seized from controversial rescue business

Mounties have emptied a warehouse of bicycles belonging to a controversial cycle rescue program that claims to buy back stolen merchandise from thieves in New Westminster, B.C.

Something about the owner refusing to talk to the press and throwing eggs at them makes me think it's fishy.

the whole business model sounds flawed. Why would someone buy back a bike when the can call the cops instead?

The idea was that he "buys" the bike from the theif and then sells it back to the rightful owner for the money he says he paid for it.

I think if I used a bike in Vancouver or any high theft area and my bike was worth a few grand I would spend the money to get a tracker for it

Fail!

anyone that buys stolen property could have the property seized by the police so it can be returned to the rightful owner, and the rightful owner is not liable for the money that was paid to the thief.

He's basically created a market for stolen bikes, not good. A pawn shop can lose it's license and face fines if caught selling stolen goods, same should apply to this guy.
