With Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, on a royal tour, Canadians this week began to size up their next king and head of state for the first time in eight years. Many consider it a royal visit of unusual import. It's a chance for Charles to cement his

I wish we had a constitional monarchy in the states.

I think if the monarchy goes Canada may look more and more like a part of the American experience, its part of the Canadian identity.

If the monarchy were ever to be dropped by Canada, I would no longer consider this my country. I was raised Canadian but in a very British household. I grew up with the royal family being a part of it. If it ever were to go, I know I would just leave to the UK (and I can obtain citizenship). Better for me to be British and no Canadian than no British and one step away from being an American.

And there is no insult intended. An American would most likely have the same shock if suddenly the presidency was tossed away in favour of a Canadian political system (as well as some other changes).

I understand a bit how you feel. A huge, very Canadian part of my soul would be ripped out if Canada became a republic. That just isn't us. We exist, in a way, because of the monarchy, and getting rid of it seems so pointless and silly. It is what originally distinguished us from the Yanks. I'm not saying it's the only thing, but it was the defining question at the beginning: 'You're traitors to the Crown, and we aren't. Go to hell.' I know it's not like that anymore, but if 50 years ago, even 40 years ago, the Crown still had a place in Canadian values I don't see how we can let it die such a dog's death in today's world where nothing matters anymore.

I wouldn't take it so far as to uproot myself and go to the UK. That's a foreign country to me. But Canada as a republic would seem somehow foreign to me as well. Strangely enough, I don't think of the Crown as a UK thing. I truly think of it as Canadian. I know the Queen lives in Britain, but somehow that doesn't even figure into the equation in my head. If the Crown dies, then this country dies a little in me.

Here's a crazy idea, and I'm just throwing this out there...

why not get a Windsor, and see if we can't get a decedent of the French Bourbon line, throw 'em together and make an actual Canadian royal family over here?

I think the problem a lot of republicans have is that the monarchy isn't Canadian and doesn't reside in Canada.

Bonapartes are a good choice I guess, but we have the flag of Bourbon on our coat of arms so I figured that'd be the best choice.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a decent idea

Personnaly I don't care at all about the Royal family since i'm french. I find it archaic and from another era. But, I don't really want to change to a republic just because of that. It would be a lot of troubles and I don't think it worths the effort.

More data that supports my "redefine the Monarchy and avoid becoming a Republic" idea.
Cut the last real political ties to the Monarch, elect a GG as 'our representative to Buckingham Palace (instead of vice versa)' and 'head of State' with not one extra bit of power.
Avoid any use of the word Republic.
Celebrate the Monarch as Head of Commonwealth, which we're still an active part of.
Time it all to the end of Elizabeth IIs reign.

If that means we get to kill the Queen, I'm in favour. :D

Even more than that Canada would start to resemble the US. Without the words Royal Canadaian a lot would be missing.

Well there are other republics that do quite well. I personally am not a monarchist. My father was British and an absolute fan of the royals. I don't see the continued need for them and I think that Canada would be better off without them. They are just figure heads and are only still in place in Britain thanks to the Queen Mom who saved their asses during the war by going into the trenches with the fighting men. We need to distance ourselves from them and start by removing their symbols from various things. I remember the FLQ days in Québec when the mail boxes were set on fire because they had symbols of the crown on them. Now they just say Canada Post. It would be better all way round if we became a total independant country.. To sum it up, they are redundant.
