Mr. Ignatieff has faced criticism this fall for offering few policy proposals as he gunned to Mr. Harper's minority government in Parliament. But unveiling green colours before an election proved costly for Mr. Dion, because the Conservatives succeeded

He said that under the Liberals, Canada would create incentives to promote the use of renewable energy like solar and wind power, finance technology like carbon sequestration to clean up its fossil- fuel production, spend on greener infrastructure like “smart” electrical grids. And the federal government would buy greener cars and make its buildings more energy efficient, Mr. Ignatieff said.

Somehow this has to be paid for. When someone hands me a menu I kinda like to see the price list that goes with it.

BTW, the Liberals also support cap-and-trade. He didn't mention it.

I think it's a good policy to promote the use of green energy for your home or business and offer incentives.

Germany has done something similar and has a huge green energy industry.

However, I don't think it should be a major platform promise. Offer incentives to people going green, with home retrofits and cars, but don't make a big deal and scare people into "Dionitis".

Those insisting we do "something" about GHGs will not be satisfied with this. They will want Ignatieff's views on a whole host of other issues, including one that Dion really made a botch of when he mused about the need to shut down the Alberta oil sands.

Iggy has a bit of a free ride here. He doesn't really have to do or say anything. He can wait until after the Copenhagen meeting and just take pot shots at whatever the government says - which won't be much of anything until they find out what the Americans are planning to do.

Changing his tune I see. It was just a matter of time since nobody in the west is buying his crap it's back to sucking for votes in the east.

    Ignatieff touts Alberta tar sands.

I like the way he's looking at Dion, like he's got some diabolical plan in store for him.

Thing is you can't attack the oil sands...you just can't do it. Too much money. Too much demand. Yet if you run on a 'clean energy' platform the oil sands will be the elephant in the room no one wants to address.

This has the makings of another disaster. You can dance around and tout this or that clean energy plan but if you're suddenly going to divert your eyes and start whistling to yourself if the oil sands comes up then the Liberals will appear to be just dishing out lipservice for votes -- something the public already (deservedly or not) suspects them of.
