An apparent snub by the Canadian government has dismayed officials on the Obama administration's task force who are working to resettle dozens of detainees here and close the prison, a high-ranking White House official told the Star.

Canada's position is in contrast to other countries eager to curry favour with the U.S. administration by helping Obama's apparent Sisyphean task to close Gitmo. Various foreign governments have stated that accepting detainees is "the right thing to do" after years of criticism about the offshore prison.

This should not be a question of do as I ask, not do as I do. Other countries are under no obligation to take Gitmo detainees. However, if some of them were resettled in the US it might act as an incentive for others.

We'll take back Omar......if he comes in a bodybag. That will be 50 years from now. Sounds about right.

Oh you mean...Canada's not willing to pick up Gitmo's dirty garbage? Next time, don't close the dump when you don't have a new place to settle them.

I thought everyone still there is innocent? Don't see the point in not taking them in then

"We're not interested in bringing detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Canada," said Dimitri Soudas. "In the case of other detainees who are not Canadian citizens and don't have a connection to Canada, there is no justification for us to bring any such individuals to Canada."

Exactly. Why should the Canadian taxpayer pay for these people? We didn't arrest them. Why doesn't the U.S. give them citizenship there? Why does it have to be our problem? Just because we're neighbors? Screw that.

The official would not speculate whether Canada's apparent snub would hinder relations between the two countries.

Who cares? What are they going to do about it?

I heard they love Coffe Crisp (Actually, they can't get that there in the US, at least not common in Michigan.)

Think less of us. Apparently Canada doesn't like not to be liked so we try to be the perfect angels on the international stage and therefore cave into minority demands to appease in order to feel good about ourselves but in reality that isn't true.
