Stocks lower as Canadian GDP, U.S. industrial data disappoints; oil, gold rise

The Toronto stock market moved lower late Wednesday morning as disappointing economic data from Canada and the United States raised more doubts about the pace of the economic recovery.

We are not out of the woods yet, especially in the US - consumer confidence is shaky, credit markets are still not functioning properly, significant losses on commercial real estate, unemployment still going up, the threat of deflation still with us, a strong belief that the private sector is not ready to take over if government stimulus is withdrawn - in fact just about all economy growth this year such as is is because of government intervention.
