Tories forming coalition with NDP, Ignatieff says

What happened to all the apin about Harper not wanting to work with the opposition?

I think it was pretty clear Kenny, Canadians dont want an election, and the parties know this. Iggy seems to be the only one with a major hard on for spending 300+ million.

Grow up. It's not like Jack Layton'll become Deputy PM or Finance Minister like that idiot Dion was willing to give him last winter. It's more like the NDP and Bloc did their own polling and found out that they're better off keeping this Parliamentary session going because they're not going to gain anything in another premature election. And that's the only reason why Layton, the self-appointed head cheerleader for the "Harper's worse than Hiter" crowd, is suddenly mewling about co-operating on confidence issues with the government.

Like I said on another thread, the Liberals are only doing this in a desperate attempt to save their hegemony in the Senate because any more appointments by Harper are threatening the imbalance that favours them. Another round of appointments by the Tories and the upper chamber becomes practically deadlocked, which is definitely not in the Liberal's best interest for if/when they take power again. Hence the Liberals walking out on the EI reform committee and the sudden urge towards a fall vote.

It's interesting that if you were to exchange the words “Liberal” and “Conservative” as well as “Harper” and “Ignatieff”, the whole thing is just as valid for the other side.

Don’t try to tell me this is anything but a desperate act by Harper to stay in power, an equally desperate act for Layton to feel useful and a desperate act by Ignatieff to get power.

Speaking of “growing up”, by suggesting that any of the actions in the house by anyone right now have a position of any moral high ground would be like suggesting that every member of this forum believe that ridenrain has the ability to be objective about politics.

The Liberals didn't get spooked until Harper made his most recent Senate appointments, so the timing of their sudden need for another election is suspect at best. Even more so considering that the economy, which was the benchmark of their ridiculous "give us fiscal report cards or else" policy, never came close to a crisis situation and is quietly coming out of the recession as successfully as most of the other non-United States economies generally are.

I stand by my analysis. The Liberals are only doing this to salvage the Chretien-era Senate that they stuffed for their own interests. Even the Dippers and Blocheads aren't going along with the Liberal "reasoning" for another elction this fall. As such any desperation is strictly being exhibitted by the Liberals.

Forgive me if I'm incorrect, but didn't Ignatieff state publically that his party was only withdrawing support for the Conservative government? He said nothing about a coalition or any other deal with the other opposition parties. I don't see this as anyone forcing an election. This is only that the Conservatives need to make one of the other opposition parties happy enough to prop them up, right?
