The proposed legislation will have two parts. The first will extend benefits to laid-off workers who have worked for years, according to government sources.

I don't know if I would call it a olive branch, I think maybe Baksheesh would be a more apt term.

So... they wait until they are pushed into a corner and there is an election in the wind..they should have done something to help long ago.. and whats with just the long term employee crap. there are thousands hurting that didn't qualify. This is another case of regional disparity.. So I guess you can now qualify if you are someone close to retirement and live in a tory approved riding! screw off harper.

Theres no election yet, so calm down.

I'm pretty sure its not a work for two months sit on your ass for a year type of EI reform Iggy wants. Have to give people inscentive to work not sit on their asses.

Keep on reading your tea leaves or smoke them whatever you do.

Threatened? I think the opposition parties are the ones threatening themselves.
If any thing these EI reforms are part of their election platform. Do the Liberals have a platform yet? I want to be king and the natural governing party of Canada needs to be returned to the throne are not legitimate components of an election platform.

If King Solomon had been as slow at making decisions as Harper he'd never have been famous....then I suppose Harper will never be famous.

Although the exact criteria have not been approved by cabinet, the focus is on workers who have paid EI premiums for many years, but have drawn few benefits.

The second part is to be introduced later in the month, and will fulfil a Conservative campaign promise from 2008 to extend maternity and parental benefits to the self-employed.

Recognition that EI will be an issue in the election given increasing unemployment levels.

The Tory response at this late date looks just a little too contrived since Diane Finley all summer long has maintained that no more needs to be done to improve EI.

But a bit too thin for the Libs and NDP. They will still be pushing for the 360 hour threshold.

Too difficult to shade inside the lines, eh.

I don't see any give in the NDP's EI position - or Iggy's. They have both made a 360-hr threshold as their line in the sand.

    Harper will ignore Layton's bleatings.

Layton said Saturday he would prefer that the parties work together on Employment Insurance reform, a job-creation plan, help for the elderly and consumer protections...

Thats the problem, harper ignores everyone, his own caucus, the opposition, the Canadian people, the press and the rest of the world. But then thats what an autocrat, demagogue does right? ie Hitler, Stalin, Napolean,Musolini.

So how's that double secret probation working out for you Grits? How's the blue ribbon EI panel going? Any big breakk throughs?
Will national child care be on the platform this time or is that still a decade away?

All sad lies just to get in power.
It's good to see legitimate politcal parties putting platforms so the people have more than the leader or brand to vote on.
