KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — They may be the cream of the crop when it comes to strength, stubbornness and agility, but it turns out that in Afghanistan, the donkey makes a lousy soldier.

There are probably a thousand one liners I could use given the key words "Donkey and Soldier", but good taste and decorum prevent me from doing so.

Due to the constraints of a proper military upbringing by the Senior Service, I stand by my original statement and in no way shape or form shall I make fun of our military bretheren, no matter how tempting.

Brits and Americans successfully use them... Canada needs to recruit more farm boys it seems! PDT_Armataz_01_25

It's about what we use them for. American and British soldiers prolley assigned them to American and British Companies, whereas by the sounds of the article the ones we used were primarily in the control of ANA personelle. Not hard to keep track of a donkey, but ANA pers. have lost/done more obscure things.

I'm thinking it's a place and role thing. The Northern Aliance folks used horses a great deal with quite a bit of success. It's very possible that they expected the mules to fit into their system when the reality is that the systen has to addapt to the mules.

    I'm curently reading:

    HORSE SOLDIERS
The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan
    By Doug Stanton

Initial US special forces teams get sent to work with the Aliance guys and are forced to saddle up and move out. Good book.

I'm going to have to pick up that book.

Have you read One soldiers War ? by Arkady Babchenko.

A soldier who turned journalist who served during the Chechen war. Couldnt believe some of the shit these guys went through, especially at the hands of their own officers.

I get them out of the library because I'm sick of hauling around book that I read only once and a while.

No. that sounds a good one because I was looking to learn more about that conflict. It's been a stepping stone for a whole lot of recent shit.
