A stack of national security documents former foreign affairs Maxime Bernier left at his ex-girlfriend's house last year contained highly sensitive information about foreign policy and global efforts to fight terrorism, according to a new investigation.

The newspaper says it received heavily redacted copies of the material through the Access to Information Act. Still, in the parts that weren't blacked out, the newspaper says the documents contain information about ? among other things ? missile-defence systems, NATO's expansion to the Balkans, Afghan prisoners, arms control in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the presence of al-Qaeda in Pakistan.

I guess rules about hadning and transporting Classified material (Tresurey board rules) don't apply to Ministers. Not like they would know anything sensitive :p

When I worked with highly classified docs with the feds I'd have gotten my ass kicked if I brought anything over Level 1 (Confidential) or over home, nevermind out for lunch to read or my Girlfriends place!

Fricken hell! Info on Afghan missions? Being stupid with info like this is the same as saying "oh who cares about the boys safety over there! I need some tail!"

In his defense I could outline much much much mishandling of domestic and foreign classified documents and systems by government workers who don't get in trouble for it, if I wanted to go to jail or never work for the feds again! Thing is the average fed employee handling this level of information gets little to no training on who to properly classify information or store it. They see no importance placed on it by the government and no punishment for leaving Secret Docs laying out on the deck of their unlocked offices in low security zones, so the system just breeds the problem.

Lol, ya and the globe is in on it too...

Does that blue C make you so dense that you can’t see the irony of the PM calling these notes inconsequential background info - yet when they are released to the public most of it is blacked out for national security purposes.

Harper and his buddies could come over and shit on your lawn and make you roll around in it, not only will you blue C branded conservatives still vote for him, you’ll do it with a smile.

Fuck I love that irony. Harper: “No secrets in the documents Max left behind, but no the public can’t read them because they have national security secrets…duh”.

I bet you didn't even read the article. Did you?

Oh goodness, like we haven't heard this before.

But in all fairness, ''Le Devoir'' broke this latest borefest. Ah leave it to the good 'ol QC media. Anything to blast the Federalist parties and make their friends at the Bloc look good.

Do you know what an FOI is and do you understand why it is blacked out? How can you then reconcile this statement:

    "ridenrain" said
No money was made nor were valuable national secrets lost. This was simply a political sting.

This spin at all. This isn't a year old it is right now that the FOI completed. The only spin was that there were no secrets lost and that this would not happen again.

Politicians leaving important documents in inappropriate places isn't unusual, just irritating.

Totally agree with it being common, completely disagree with it being just an irritant. I have zero tolerance for such sloppy handling but I understand why it happens. The damage control that this wasn't important was bogus and laughable but that was an irritant. The FOI report show without a doubt that his removal from office was not over trivial partisan matters but of issues of national security.

Yes, it did. Had Harper owned up then to what was in the misplaced documents, this wouldn't be a story, would it?
