NHL pushes Balsillie's Coyotes bid closer to the cliff

lol. The NHL has offered 140 million for the team as their official staring bid, 72 million lower that Basillis starting bid.

If Moyes turned down Reinsdorf's offer of 150 million, why the fuck would Rattman think he'd take 10 million less? Moyes wants what Jimmy is offering.

so why are they trying to keep the king of blackberries out of the loop? what has he done or said to offend the NHL?

Really sad, this is. You have a market that would love a team and one that has no love/lost if it leaves. Win win to buy and move it. Really bad play on the NHL right now. Sell the team, move them and carry on.

He dared to challenge Lord Gary's vision and legacy, by wanting to move a struggling American team with no future back to Canada where it belongs.

The NHL owners are alot like lemmings and about as bright. As long as Bettman is putting money in their pockets by screwing the NHLPA, they blindly follow him, but as soon as they start losing money back to the players, Gary'll dissapear faster than a fart in a hurricane.

I can hardly wait till the next collective bargining agreement.

They're keeping him out for two reasons:

1. Jimmy didn't play by the old boys' rules. If he wanted a franchise, he had to come to the board and kiss their collective asses (and likely several individual asses) and do his ivy-league, secret hand-shake duty to earn membership. Now he's barred for life.

2. The NHL owners know that an expansion franchise in Southern Ontario could earn over $500M in franchise fees. Divide half a billion by 30 owners. The NHL will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow a team to relocate for nothing when they could put >$10M cash in each of their pockets with an expansion...even if the potential owner was someone the Board approved of.

Jim did play by the rules. Twice. Once with the Pens and again with the Predators.


If these guys are holding out for an expansion fee, these NHL owners are idiots.

Why?

By propping up a team financially for years, they're spending that money they may get with an expansion fee. If every team is dumping millions to support a franchise that's failing, their losses will far outweigh any gains they may make for an expansion team.

Sure, grant some guy a team in Hamilton, then hand away your share to prop up shitty franchises like Phoenix, Florida and Tampa. Considering the economy is in the shitter in the US, expect these teams to tank even worse.

This is a win-win situation for the NHL. Move the team to a more profitable market which means more money for the league and all creditors are happy.

These owners have already spent at least 10 million into a slush fund, totaling 300 million for situation just like this.

So let's say they spent their money to keep the team in Phoenix and down the road they get 10M for an expansion fee, they're no further ahead.

This doesn't take into account the amount these owners set aside each year as revenue sharing to help out the likes of Phoenix to even compete and stay within the payroll limits.

I'm not disagreeing with you. You're saying "They want their cake" and I'm saying "Yeah, but they want to eat it too." 'Eating it too' means getting new ownership into the Coyotes (moving them or not) AND selling a franchise in S.W. Ontario.
