It's good to see that we're learning from our mistakes. Trudeau and the Boomers saddled my generation (so called Generation X) with debt. We swore we'd be smarter. But now we've turned around fucked you young buggars just like our parents did to us. Shameful.

Shameful that there's so many "armchair Prime Ministers" that don't offer anything in terms of an alternative solution, but complain with consistency.

There's also a lot of "armchair PMs" that HAVE offered alternative solutions, and what they DO complain about is that they're consistently ignored. Hell, some of us even get to make a living at it.

Seems like the majority of those in Canada, at least those quoted by media sources and used by major banks and political parties can't seem to get it right.

Perhaps all these people "in the know" are hidden in some bunker, ignored by everyone...banks, media and the politicians.

I'd be interested to hear your plan to stop the recession, prevent catastrophic job losses and not run a deficit.

Yes, cut government in Canada....and magically, the economic downturn that the entire World is going through wouldn't effect us? If only it was that simple.

I know your sarcasm was meant to be rhetorical, but "yes". It is that simple. IF we hadn't gone to debt, we would have been able to deal with this recession. But either way, government is an inefficient use of resources. When faced with a choice between using resources efficiently or inefficently, the answer axiomatic.

Oh yeah, GM's a stunning example of resource efficiency alright. I'm sure the reply will be 'those damn unions' or some such. Harper and the Harris retreads were so Hell-bent on lopping-off taxes that they gave no consideration to what public services that would have to be cut back to live within their means.

Mind you I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it came out that their intention all along was to leave Canadians and any successive governments with no choice but to do the cutting that the Conservatives are too weak-spined to man-up to.

I think nothing but the strongest majority would be "man enough" to push such a government cutting program. Any cutting would be suicide in politics.
Remember that the Harper government wanted to save $27 Million by cutting the $1.95 parties got for their vote, even though 61% of the people supported it? The other parties were so shaken they threatened to take down the governmen with a coalition.
Even that winpy 10% they took from Quebec "artists" was a huge problem.

I'm firmly behind less government but it's clear that it's impossible in a minority. It's Canadians who need to push this one and after decades of cradle to grave socialism, we're unlikely to see it.

You really shouldn't put words in peoples' mouths. I never suggested corporations were bastions of efficiency, in fact I'm on the record quite to the contrary. Nor am I, in any way, anti-union, which is also a position that I've well-stated previously. Finally, there hasn't been a stronger critic of Harper or Harris on this forum. Get your head out of your ass. Government waste and inefficiency is where you cut; not from effective/essential services like Harris cut. You cut the bureaucracy. You free up the budget from servicing debt, then you can use fiscal policy in times of need.

The answer is quite simple: government CANNOT create wealth. They take money from one pocket and put it in another. There's no plus-value. Yes we need to cut A LOT in government and deregulate. That's what caused the crisis !
