Getting a jump on the free agent market, the Montreal Canadiens moved to secure their centre ice position via trade, making a deal with the New York Rangers Tuesday and taking on a whole lot of salary in the process.
Why would anyone want this stiff? He's overpriced, underperforms and now he takes a significant hit on your salary cap! Montreal = dumb, dumb trade and they give up McDonagh too? Should have hammered out a deal of Lecavalier, but this trade makes the Rangers look like geniuses for a superb salary dump
Gainey has to be the laughing stock of the league after this deal. Why trade a fast, gritty two-way forward with three 20 goal seasons, plays both PP and PK with a salary cap hit at no more than 2.5M, plus one of your top prospects for a small, overpaid, one-dimensional 2nd line centre... felt sorry for Sather?
Why not just re-sign Koivu at 4M and keep Higgins and McDonough?
Figured since NYR was trying to unload that huge contract of Gomez's and having a hard time doing it that Montreal would have some leverage. Guess not.
Brilliant hockey analysis! Gomez has a "few" Cup rings?!?! Even Nick Kypreos has a ring, but doesn't mean he would've commanded 7 mill/year? Montreal got screwed big time and hat's off to NY as they unloaded a fat, bloated contract on the Habs and got decent impact player and potential in return.
Nice trade for the Habs...now if only the other Canadian teams (like Edmonton and Ottawa) would do something!
I agree! Heatley probably wants to go to Edmonton anyway since Quinn is the new coach. He wouldn't have to adjust his attitude, that's for sure
Who is Edmonton ready to give up? I heard rumours, but they all came from a very dubious 'journalist'...
Why not just re-sign Koivu at 4M and keep Higgins and McDonough?
I think it's time the new owners looked at new management. Bob Gainey's player moves are making Serge Savard look like Sam Pollack.
Just because he has a history with the Habs doesn't mean shite if he doesn't produce and this move isn't gonna win him the cup.
