A Hong Kong man has been arrested at Pearson airport with $33,000 in cash as he was heading to Toronto to allegedly buy 12 infrared thermal imaging cameras and then ship the security-sensitive equipment to China, police say.
The cameras, which can sell for up to $25,000 each, are banned for sale to China for "national security and regional stability reasons," according to an affidavit filed in Ohio court.
There must be something more to these cameras than they're reporting. I'm not sure how how a simple IR camera can cause regional instability. The Chinese must have IR cameras already (easy enough to obatin from Taiwan or Japan), so I wonder what makes these ones so special?
