For farmers, this stinks: Belching and gaseous cows and hogs could start costing them money if the federal government decides to charge fees for air-polluting animals.

But the American Farm Bureau Federation said, based on federal agriculture department figures, it would require farms or ranches with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs to pay an annual fee of about $175 for each dairy cow, $87.50 per head of beef cattle and $20 for each hog.

8O That's a lot of money when you consider what they sell for / produce per year.

The idea is good, but your'r doing it in the wrong place, do it in Washington starting with Congress. The flatulence, hot air, belching for these (the number one generator) of these kinds of gasses. They tax the hell out of us shouldn't we return the favor?

PETA are a certified bunch of idiots, for sure. They always seem to forget that there needs to be ethical treatment of people as well as animals, but always manage to choose doing something that's unethical for people.

I think this tax should only be applied to industrial farming operations, though. Corporate cattle feed lots and pig farms are an enormous source of pollution. They have gigantic cesspools of shit, piss and dead animals that they then spread onto fields where it leeches into the water table, killing anything that needs water to live. It should be a 100% tax for these people.

The story may be old, but the issue is current.

The passing of the Waxman-Markey, cap and trade bill is expected to be held up in the states by the representatives of disgruntled farmers who don't want a hidden fart tax.

There's money to be made here. Maybe mount little pilot lights to the cows ass and flare the farts off.

Yes, a little dated but I was driving my rig home and it was on the radio.

First time I heard about this and thought it was sorta comical.. worth looking up online and sharing.

BTW, the Congress is set to vote on this soon, which I guess makes it current and relevant. :P

Maybe they could charge on a "per-fart" basis.
Set up a counter on each cow, when have someone make the rounds once a month to read the meter.

All its going to do is put the price of food up.
The worst part is that it will make the factory farms more powerfull and the little guys closer to bankrupcy.
