Rent in Vancouver has been going down over the past year, a fair bit in some places. There is also a lot of rentals on the market to choose from, so i don't know where "good luck finding one" comes from. I just had to go through renting an apartment and it was hard finding a tenant because there is so much inventory out there right now, I had to lower my price $300 a month.
One of my friends is actually going to move just because he can get a cheaper place now that is larger.
I just bought an apartment downtown at the end of April, the prices had come down a lot.
Vancouver may be a relatively expensive city when compared to other Canadian cities, but when compared to the world stage it is not. The renter I rented too also lives in San Fransisco, its WAY more expensive there.
The weekend before we rented our apartment we rode our bikes out the front door of our building onto the seawall, around false creek then Stanley park and I really realized how lucky I am to live here.
I got a nice rancher out here in Surrey for ya. Right beside a grow op, a crack house and a park for you're late night follies. Bring you're own Camero and Kevlar.

You have a very inflated sense of pessimism. They got pills for that, you know;.
They make everything better... Colours literally seem brighter.
Great idea.. Maybe I could get my doctor to prescribe pot so I can grow it in my house and make $100k tax free every year.
I've been posting craploads of law & punishment articles on the drug and gang problems in Vancouver but they get ignored. This strikes me like those awards that circulate transit systems every 5 years or so. They have nothing to do with merit and are simply a mutual congradulatory society.
I totally agree with the comments....good luck affording an apartment let alone find one.
Maybe "livable" if you own a tent?
