Militant Protestant supporters of a Scottish soccer team beat to death a Roman Catholic man in the latest sign of how sports rivalries inspire sectarian bloodshed in Northern Ireland, police and politicians said yesterday.
soccer needs to give way to hockey, the contact sport will bring more catharsis to the fans, rather than seeing a bunch of guys mince about the field yelling in agony and rolling about when a defender breaths on them.
Other than I don't like the game soccer, THIS is one of the reasons why I hate it. Players are overpaid adolescents, who get arrogant as hell and think the world owes them, and supporters (well, if you can call m that...) trash things, cities and people just for fun. They can't seem to look at it as the game it is...
This man is dead, his neighbour severely injured, his wife in hospital, and for what? For freakin nothing!!
For feakin nothing has been going on in N.Ireland for years and years. There is probably more to this than soccer, there is a new revised uprising happening there and there are still some very deep hostility. Militant groups that are still supporting separation from Britain..

absolutely...
it's a scar on the "beautiful game"
I was in Glasgow last year during a Rangers game and I got quite nervous going through the train station surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of fans in Rangers and Dundee jerseys, all eyeing one another malevolently... and I'm 6'5" 250 lbs of hockey/rugby player... violent crowds are not my thing...

Thats true, but it seems people who like soccer are also the people that trash places. My dad never took us to a pro-soccer game. WAY too dangerous. Do you take your kids to a hockey game? Of course! There's the difference...

You are half-right ken. This is all about tribal religion. Just because the Catholics and Protestants are no longer actively bombing/shooting each other doesn't mean they like each other.
The hatred between Irish and Scottish Catholics/Proddies goes back at least 400 years and will continue. This has nothing to do with sport and is all to do with ethnic/religious hatred.
Wellington summed up the Brits when he spoke of the British Army that faced the French during the Napoleonic wars:
"A French army is composed very differently from ours. The conscription calls out a share of every class — no matter whether your son or my son — all must march; but our friends — I may say it in this room — are the very scum of the earth. People talk of their enlisting from their fine military feeling — all stuff — no such thing. Some of our men enlist from having got bastard children — some for minor offences — many more for drink; but you can hardly conceive such a set brought together, and it really is wonderful that we should have made them the fine fellows they are."

And political hatred too. Like it or not, the British Protestants have done plenty to piss off Catholics in North Ireland.

Good Post Raydan. Theres underlying issues that are used as excuses to get out of hand.

In today's news:

Nothing much has changed in British society.
Soccer teams in the UK have militant wings of their fan clubs? No wonder UK teams were banned from international competitions at one point.
