Thirty seconds can be a long time in combat. Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge.
Directly into fight mode, personal safety is not a forethought. 30 seconds can be a lifetime or a life.
2. The Taliban couldn't see his pink shorts or his flip flops due to the sandbags blocking their view, so the phsycological warfare argument is moot
While I admire his courage the clothing is suppose to act as a lawyer of protection against flying debris. I'm sure his platoon would prefer he take 30 seconds to get dressed properly and be good to go as opposed to being exposed and being a potential casualty from something which could have been prevented if he was properly dressed.
Not sure what your getting at here, he had his armor on, the pants issued to the GI's won't protect them from anything.

I've read the story that it was his mother or his sister that bought him that for a joke with the guys in the army. He's only 19.
I'm sure the military supplies underwear.
I can imagine how horrible and uncomfortable they must feel.
