Melting ice could cause gravity shift

The melting of one of the world's largest ice sheets would alter the Earth's field of gravity and even its rotation in space so much that it would cause sea levels along some coasts to rise faster than the global average, scientists said yesterday.

I would like to hear the Global Cooling deniers call this good science.

I'd love to see some studies how Earths gravity reacted when all the Earthmasses changed in how we know them now...

this is complete and utter BS.

The only thing that affects our gravity is our rotation and the moon. To assume the mass of the ice melting would change our gravity is simply erroneous. The mass is simply transferred, it isn't 'removed' for the system.

If you want to start 'scaring' people, put this on for size. There will be no life on Earth in about 42 000 years. Why? the moon is slowly escaping Earth orbit, our planet does not have sufficient mass to keep the moon. When the moon sling shot's out of Earth's gravitational field, that mean no more tide, which means the Ocean's will starve of O2 and presto... we dead.

Guess it's time to update my last will and testament.

im sure they also estimate that amy winehouse must be shot or greenhouse gasses will kill north america..and if arrested development isnt back on tv, all the forests (in north america) will burn down.

Nobody said the mass is removed from the system, just that it will shift the center of gravity. It says right in the title - "gravity "

The center of gravity of the earth is based on the distribution of its mass. If you change the distribution, you change the center of gravity.

What's that, a concept you learn in high school physics class? Junior high school science class, even? Or did you just not read any of the article before claiming it's BS?

The Seaquake that caused the 2004 Tsunamis also changed Earth's rotation by several thousandths of a second. The change in mass distribution from that quake was enough to affect the rotation of the earth.

I'd like to hear every environmental scientist get together and finally admit that none of them actuially know what is going to F$%#in happen.
So much rehtoric and fear mongering, every time I see the news it's one more environmental catastrophy added to the list.
    Just admit 2 things guys
    1. Yup, we're F&^%ed
    2. Nope we don't know how it will happen.

I wonder if they take into account all the snowbirds heading to Florida as well. That's what really screws with global warming!!
