Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said Thursday that the Conservative government will strive to "work peacefully" with other polar nations but "will not hesitate to defend Canadian Arctic sovereignty."
Bravo! Canada has the right to defend her sovereignty whether it is again the Russians or against us for that matter. Canada hopefully can work this out diplomatically, but Russians are impressed by one thing FORCE. If need be I believe Canda will defend herself wuite well.
Ya right, lets send icebreakers and build deep sea ports and and and....Maybe Canadians should address the problem of the fuel and food shortage in the north that has been happening for the last 4 years that has fallen on deaf ears or are you Canucks just willing to all of a sudden be interested in the Arctic when someone else is?
Unreal!
We have fellow Canadians living in the Arctic peeps, maybe we should listen to them first before some politician trying to gain some points?
ziggy since you seem to know more about this maybe you should do something. There's a lot most of us don't know about other parts of the country. We can't be expected to do something about a problem we don't know about.

Not much I can do,it's been on the CBC north news sites for many years about the fuel and food shortage,I used to see many barges frozen in on the north tip of Hudsons bay in october while flying home. We have lots of Canadians in the Arctic, truth is we cant supply them.
I do believe the media has done it's job though of fearmongering and theres a few guys on this site that should work for the national enquirer the way they word a topic.
I usually dont like to use wiki as a reference but will today,if you type in any community name in the search bar regarding the Arctic you will see how many were there when the relocation took place and how many are there now,the numbers might surprise you.
Try these: Rankin inlet Baker lake Repulse bay Whale cove Arviat chesterfield inlet Hall beach
This is the Arctic and we own it. Lets not get 2 steps ahead of ourselves here.
The arctic and me at pre-x-mas 2 years ago,my caper buddy was on the scraper. That was a blast! Most wont notice the doughnut I pulled in the Bombi. The ice is about ten feet thick there and -48.
We own the Arctic allready peeps, actually the french do but thats another topic. What we dont do is take care of the peeps up there, res school cheques didnt cut it,the elders said it would fill the jails and it did.
We need to recognize theres actually Canadians living in our north. And my pilot Colin is a Vulcan.

By the way the artic is a high wage, full employment jurisdiction. I thought it was sort of a backwater but I looked up the data and they have a robust, resource based economy - something like Alberta. Reports that I read is they can't keep the kids in high school because of the jobs opportunity. Actually there are fine.

Actually the wages are shit and they have a different idea of work then most of us. Filling the quota to hire over half native was allmost impossible, they arent lazy, just a different lifestyle then us,most dont have schedules or ever have.
Then the Canadian govt. decides that giving every one who attended a res school $30,000 would clear the guilt. Worst thing they could have ever done, even the elders agreed it was a waste of money and only led to full prisons.
They need jobs, training for the future jobs and such.
this is all fine and nice to talk the talk. But if push comes to shove in the winter we have almost no operational ability or capability in the high arctic. Even in the summer months, AT BEST we could deploy maybe 1000 troops, but they would not be able to be supported for long.
All governments have been talking and talking and beating their chests but none of them are living up to anything they are claiming.
We STILL have NO arctic capable Navy ships, we have NO permanent military presence in the arctic.
So from where I sit, this is all hollow and meaningless posturing.

We got the rangers, allmost all Innuit males are rangers and proud of it and laugh if you want but those dog sleds and ww2 british 303 rifles are what works in the north, you can bring all the technology you want to the arctic but it will still be a ranger in furs and dog sled that will kick ass at the end of the day.
I know we are not big nation but we have to defend our bordersl
