I used to be classified 'obese' on the BMI scale (5'10" and 230 lbs - about 31), but I still played hockey and rode my bike. I was just to lazy to eat properly and exercise enough. Once I got off the sofa and started acting like a normal person (eating sensibly and exercising several times a week), I dropped below the 'obese' category. And it was surprisingly easy too.
I could maybe see an argument against morbidly obese people, but the BMI scale is not the be all end all method for measuring one's health.
Before my Junior year in high school I was swimming about 3 miles and day with 45 mins of weight lifting 5 times a week. I was really skinny. When I got a job (lifeguarding) I stopped working out and I would literally eat out almost everyday. After about 5 months I gained a bunch of weight and I stopped the eating out but I did nothing about exercise. Then starting last fall I started to exercise and knocked out soda and junk food (I had to because I was a broke college student). And then I lost about 50 pounds since then.
This was me in 2007 (on the left)

The only answer I have to this is: BS!!
People eat what they need (or more, and get fat, or less and die of anorexia), and people who work out 7 times a week, 2 hours a day, eat lots. They have to. Just stick to a healthy diet, and let McD's go bankrupt.
I don't work out, I don't eat much, and have a superhealthy BMI of 22.6
So there!
Another issue that contributes to obesity is all of the artificial growth hormone in our food that is making a bad situation worse. My son is 3 inches taller than I was at his age. The way our food is grown and how junk food is cheaper than healthy food are also contributing factors
That is true. I am 6'6" (just measured a few days ago) which is 3" taller then anyone else in my family. I also think it also causes kids maturity levels now days. Kids that are 8 are now hanging out with the friends at the mall with there Ipods and Cellphones talking about weight loss and having relationships. I mean, years ago kids at that age would be still playing with barbies or playing with there neighbors outside.
Nor do they own a cellphone or iPod.
Don't you think that is more lack of parenting than anything else?
I think in general though, kids are just maturing faster. Which I think has to do the hormones.
