2 British soldiers killed in Northern Ireland ambush

Dark Day for Ulster. I just hope McGuinness and Robinson can get a handle on this and not allow some members of the PIRA to destroy 10 years of peaceful progress between the Prods and the Catholics. Ulster does not need any more needless bloodshed.

Llama66, there use to be a military outpost on every street corner in N.Ireland. Two soldiers in this sandbag type post with there guns always pointed at civilians walking by.

Than there was bigger outposts around with gun holes in them and everytime you walked by them you knew some guy was pointing his gun at you.

After the military dropped all that. Progress was made in N.Ireland but not for Prods and Catholics. They still do there drawls and always will.

Since a couple of months now to a year things have been escelating and the British Military is back settings up blockaids. Not as bad as they use to have it. No outposts on every street corner but as things escalate it will be exactly back to normal.

Kids throwing movan cocktails at the military. People hanging up wires to decpiate tank commanders. Gun fights, terrorism.

It's almost always starts by one trigger happy soldier who makes a mistake.

IMO most North Irish just plain out hate the British and they always have since the beginning of time. Decades and Decades of hate and brawling.

However a lot of people want progress, they want jobs, entertainment and amung other things. They want to go to school without being shot, etc.

These wars always stops progress. The fault of both sides. Couple of years ago most homes diddn't even have heating. You had to wear those heating blankets (They got heating now though thanks to progress made during the peace process).

Then why do the majority of them(yes the Protestants still hold a slight majority and there are a few Catholic loyalists) wish to remain British? Face it, Ulster has been a shit hole from time immemorial. They've always been at odds with everyone for the past few thousand years, including the southerners who have been quite clear that they don't want the enire fractious lot, Catholics and Protestants.

In fact, the Catholic majority and the Protestant minority, in Eire, have got on quite well, the Protestants holding major political power quite a few times since the Republic came into being.

A large part of the problem too, is many of the Protestants are ethnically Scottish and not Irish, brought over during the time of the Ulster Plantation. The English thought they could displace the the Paddies with with disenfranchised Scots (homeless because they were burned out of their homes by greedy English and enterprizing Scottish nobles/landowners).

I understand the situation in Ulster. This was an unprovoked attact. there haven't really been serious PIRA violence since the Good Friday peace accord was signed in 1998. Gerry Adams was supposed to get his terrorist buddies to disarm.

Most Protestant Irish do not hate the British. Most, if not Protestants love the British, hence Ulster, if you know a Irish Prod ask them sometime, the Grand Orange Lodge is a very pro-crown organisation, this is why Ulster did not join the Republic of Ireland in the 1920's.

The Violence you describe has not been commonplace since the Troubles, there has been violence in Ireland since the end of the Troubles, but nothing really targeted at Police or Military.

You need to do a bit more research on this. The Ulster Prods consider themselves British, and the British consider the Ulster NI guys as 'uber-Brits'. Many catholics consider themselves more 'Irish', but that is over simplifying a very complex issue. And what is all this crap about electric blankets?

Frigging IRA took responsibility for the attack. I thought all of Gerry's buddies were to have disarmed. Ian Paisley got all his boys to disarm. I just wish all the Irish could get along.

It will never happen Llama. I'm first generation English, Mum and Dad are from Cork and Dublin. I have a resonable grasp on the ethnic hatred bred on both sides. I also served in HM Forces for 10 years, although I was never posted to NI because of my family connections.
This stuff will go on for ever, albeit in a much reduced manner from what we were all used to at the height of the Troubles.

lol, I'm Irish, Family is out of Belfast, I keep getting hounded to join the Orange Lodge. I have a buddy who thinks a good Catholic Church is a burnt one. Majority of the Irish in Canada had ancestors that came from North Ireland because all they pretty much had to eat was potatoes and they were diseased and the population was starving. Britain had the reserves to give out and feed North Ireland's hunger but they diddn't. As the result they had no other choice but to make a new life in Canada.

That same disrespect has been carried out ever since, the Irish has always been considered and treated like dog shit by the British and that is why the Irish hate Britain.

Excuse me? I got family is Belfast. I visit them once and awhile and my mom visits them a lot. Even lived there for a couple of years. I believe I know my shit. Incase you don't know regarding the IRA and violence in North Ireland. Belfast is considered the worst.

Its true, Most protestant Irish that live in Ulster are very loyal to the crown. The Orange Lodge is one of the most loyalist institutions in all of the commonwealth. Remember there was the IRA for the Catholics, the protestants had the UFF and the UDF. I'm guessing you have family in west Belfast which is why you believe the Irish don't like the British. I have news for you dude, there are many who would rather die then join the Republic of Ireland, 6 counties refused to join Michael Collins in the 20's. Those same 6 will stand united against an another attempt to force them to join now. there is still far too many that believe that 6 into 26 will never go.
