Overtaxation os also a bad idea.
Voters are better at spending their own money than governments are.

A surplus is overtaxation IF YOU DON'T HAVE DEBT TO PAY DOWN.

Not to mention the increase in spending due to our country being at war.

    Harper's an economist. 8O

I'd rather be overtaxed a bit until we're debt free, instead of making interest payments forever, wouldn't you? Or are you one of those suckers who only pays the minimum when you get your credit card bill at the end of the month?

Right now we spend almost $30 BILLION a year paying interest on our massive debt. That's a helluva lot of tax cuts, defence spending or social programs we can't afford.

Well, then make debt repayment a part of the budget, that most people can understand there is no need for a surplus....ever

Who were the parties who were determined to vote down the budget before it was even released? They didn't even read it and were planning to shut down the government.
Someone better ask you're coolition partner, Jack Layton what he wants to do with that government money. From what I saw, it looked like it was huge raise time for all his union buddies.

So then you want Harper to raise taxes to pay the debt down?

    Make up your mind...

Debt repayment is an acceptable part of the budget that I have no problem with, I do however have a huge problem with excess surpluses.

If in the future they raise taxes solely for debt repayment purposes fine, but if they raise taxes and not repay.....I will be pissed!!

Yep. I would have liked him to take the massive surplus he inherited and put the vast majority of it towards the debt.

No, you can have tax cuts in the good times, you just can't also have increased spending. It's one or the other.
