VENICE, Italy -- Water in Venice has risen to its highest level in more than 20 years, leaving much of the Italian city under floods and forcing residents and tourists to wade through knee-high water.

I really hope no one around here thinks this is due to climate change.

I don't because this has been happening for a very long time in Venice. It was happening back in the 1960's and National Geographic covered it. Venice gets flooded when there are heavy rains and it also gets flooded due to the historically acknwoledged freak tides of the Adriatic. Being at the head of the Adriatic Venice experiences tidal conditions not unlike that of the Bay of Fundy.

In short, it is not nature that is responsible for Venice flooding, it is poor planning that it at fault for building a low-lying city in a bay that is prone to seasonal and tidal flooding.

and between the floods and the tides, Venice has been sinking for a long
    time now.

The project of the floating dam , is not from the water coming up,
its from the city going down.

The city was started where it was because it provided excellent protection
from pirates.. probably still does :)
