Pirates' luxury lifestyles on lawless coast

Somalia's increasingly brazen pirates are building sprawling stone houses, cruising in luxury cars, marrying beautiful women -- even hiring caterers to prepare Western-style food for their hostages.

Sounds like we need more responses like the Indian Navy's (they sank a pirate ship) yesterday. That, or a Q-ship to put a dent in these bastards.

Agreed, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they have ties to Islamic terrorist groups as well, They should all be sunk, if a guarenteed death at the bottom of the ocean is all they gain then they will not keep pirating. Yar says I.

Carpet bomb their towns and deny them a base to operate from. Otherwise we get to keep dealing with this crap.

The Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines is and they are into piracy too, as are the Free Aceh movement (Indonesia), so it would be little surprise if these guys are supported/financed/armed by terror groups.

No, I don't think carpet bombing towns in East Africa is the correct solution. The correct solution is a permanent military presence in the region, coupled with strikes on their safe havens/ports, by commando teams/air power. Top it off with private security on merchant ships transiting the area and/or a series of Q-ships to kill off a few hundred of these bastards and it would stop PDQ.

Glad to know someone knows me!

Eventually someone will get sick of these jerks and will go in and clean house. I doubt it will be Obama but if the Somalis capture an Israeli, Chinese, or Russian flag ship then those folks will definitely go in with malice aforethought. PDT_Armataz_01_40

Define "permanent military presence." A naval base? A few ships off the coast? Air patrols?

If you're speaking of a naval base, I'd bet the Kenyans, or some other coastal African nation would love the extra money a US/Nato naval base would provide, but setting a permanent presence in Somalia might be a very, very dangerous enterprise.

I hear Blackwater is training up some ex-Navy SEALs for some private security alternatives.

I'm suprised it took this long for the free market to sell a solution to this. Problem is the clock is already ticking untill the lefties start to cry bloody murder over all the boatloads of blind orphins and nuns that will all be brutally murdered when they went out fishing.

Whatever happened that stopped ships in international waters from carrying weapons for self defence? Considering these pirates only have RPGs and their range is very limited, changing from shotguns for skeet off the back to rifles would be enough to scare these idiots off.

Probably because the private sector expected the freaking to deal with pirates. At least people are pissed off enough to start doing stuff about it now.
