I have had my bell rung much in the same way as the girl in the story. Same thing got back up, played, played more games and a few days later hit the ground. I had no idea. When you are so dedicated you dont think of the after effects and think just about winning. whenever I heard 'you are concussed' I just dismissed it because I never thought it was a big deal. It comes down to the mentally 'win at all costs' and the only way you dont play is if you are dead or missing a limb.
I suppose development of their skills my have something to do with that statistics. If they’ve never played in a league where there’s been body contact they may not be able to anticipate the possible contact especially when there shouldn’t be any. The article also points out their skating style and I think for the lower caliber players that may be true. Out of all the ones I’ve ever skated with it’s the higher level players that have the knees bent low centre of gravity style of skating. I’ve skated with a Canadian Gold medalist, NCAA and Canadian University players and have found their talent level all over the place. Obviously the current women’s team member is the best out of all of them but the other two levels left me a little surprised. They played a much slower chippy style with lots of cross checking and stick work. A friend of mine who is a woman, will only skate with men because she find the women’s league is too rough. She’s an amazing athlete and can keep up to any male and is in better shape. She’s a world class athlete in another sport but will never be considered the “token” girl. She’s currently playing with a broken toe too so can handle a bit of pain. I’m told by all of them it’s not usually the ones who can play well that will hurt you but the ones who are bigger and have little skill that will mess you up. They also complain about the lack of vision because the have to wear the bird cages which may also be a reason. I know someone that’s currently doing his masters paper on hockey and concussions, so I’ll have to inquire about the inclusion of women.

This is so true. I was invited out to play with a local womens team, I was told they were a div 1 or 2 level. I assumed that it would have been the same as mens divs. It was far from it, I was getting hacked and cheap shots all game. I wont play womens, only mens for the same reason...less chance of injury.

Same hear, about 5 years ago I got a mild concussion playing hockey, I continued playing and thought I was fine.
Then the room started spinning when I went to bed. I don't know how anyone can play with a concussion, it took me months to get back to normal.

Again, compare this with football where the trainor if not the coach will take you out of the game, for at least a series of play. They also won't (or shouldn't) allow a plaer to return until cleared by a doctor.
Win at all costs is stupid when you have the rest of your life to consider.
I should have stipulated that it was only a friendly game. It was incidental contact, not on purpose. I was stupid, I should have stayed off the ice.
"TattoodGirl" said Depends on the Coaches, trainers and if a kid...parents. I would like to see more stats than this on concussions as a whole in hockey.
Yes and I would add level of play and value of the player on the team. Trainers take a course but its more first aid and stabilization.

Really? Our trainers are usually nurses. They still need a trainers course. Nursing has little to do with sports medicine........although I think the trainers course is a sports first aid.
There is only one type of nurse that comes out of school and none are versed in Sports Medicine. My mom was a nurse and ran a hospital….she also rubbed my neck when it was broken. Sports injuries are a different animal and no semi-pro or pro team has a nurse on the bench or side lines.
So thats what's wrong with me
very kindly!......*bites tongue*......
