KANDAHAR -- The Afghan National Army has declared victory in defending a southern city from an attempted Taliban takeover after days of heavy fighting that tested the mettle of an Afghan battalion under Canadian mentorship.

Having Afghan police and Afghan troops killing taliban is going to have a far more demoralizing effect that having foreign infidels doing it. If this happens enough, maybe the taliban will see that their not wanted anymore and go back to Pakistan.

You'd think that but the Taliban doesnt care who is shooting at them, the ANA constantly wins battles. The only reason that this one made the news is because the Canadians were commanding them.

Not really, The ANA wins battles because they are mostly lead 100% and mostly faught by foriegn soldiers with the addition of ANA soldiers just assisting them.

This battle was mostly faught by the ANA, which is demoralizing for the Taliban because the Taliban have always hoped that the ANA would not be trained in time to defeat them when we all leave. However it's battles and victories like this that will demoralize Taliban Commanders and Soldiers. Because they are seeing good signs of the ANA proving them wrong.

    When were you over there?

I wasn't but that dosen't mean that I can't have a good idea or insight.

Sure, on a day to day setting, the taliban will shoot up the ANA and police as easy as they will western soldiers but in the long haul, this is about hearts and minds and when the legitimate Afghan forces are seen to be standing up against the taliban, they see the benefits of schools and hospitals, etc. more and more average Afghans will come to realize which side is winning.

I dont think the fact that the ANA won a battle under Canadian command will demoralize them any more than other pervious battles they have had against the ANA or any other military force.

The ANA going on patrols and defeating the Taliban by themselves is not a new thing.

Nearly every battle I was in the ANA were up front with us.

I'm just thinking that if the taliban are defeated by their countrymen then that will have a greater effect than being killed by foreign devils.

I didn't know that they were so effective on their own. That's not a story that the CBC or western media want to tell us.

The problem is that the ANA reports of the outcomes of their battles cannot really be substantiated. The CF hears reports of an ANA offensive where they killed 100+ Taliban on a patrol; CTV and CBC are not able to call the ANA up to get details. So this is why I think the ANA is largely left out of the stories home we hear, unless they are grouped in with the Americans or Canadians.
